Welcome to the forest! GMF is a place of peaceful co-existence for everyone.
All programs begin at Great Mountain Forest’s East Gate, 201 Windrow Road, Norfolk, CT.
GMF has no trash receptacles, so please pack out what you pack in.
GMF is a working forest. Be alert and watch for trucks and other heavy equipment.
The collection of stones, soil, plant specimens, animal specimens, or cultural artifacts is prohibited.
Please set clear expectations for behavior before embarking on the field trip. Chaperones need to remain responsible for student behavior during the duration of the field experience. Please bring at least one chaperone per 10 students (minimum 2 chaperones per group). There is no fee for chaperones.
We ask that groups arrive between 9:00-9:30 AM for morning programs. Full-day programs include a 30-minute lunch break and typically end at 2:00 PM. If your group needs different start or end times, please contact us ahead of time so we can make adjustments.
Be bear and tick- aware when hiking. Dress for the weather and natural setting. The desire to learn rapidly fades when children are cold or wet.
If bringing lunch, paper bag lunches are recommended. If weather is inclement, lunch can occur under cover. Potable water isn’t available. Bring your own.
When scheduling a program let us know about children with special needs-physical, emotional or learning. This allows us to make the appropriate arrangements prior to your arrival if possible.
GMF reserves the right to cancel programs in the event of hazardous conditions.
The cost for a group of 20 students is as follows:
- half-day (2 ½ hours) field program – $250
- full day (5 hours) – $400
For groups larger than 20, there is an additional charge of $15 per student.
Groups with more than 25 students will be divided and registered as two programs, each billed at the regular rate. Invoices are sent after scheduling. We want all students to have the opportunity to participate. If program costs are a barrier, please contact our office about financial assistance options.
