Job Summary: A synchronous tutor provides remote drop-in tutoring to students through a virtual platform at agreed-upon scheduled times each week in a predetermined subject area of expertise. As a synchronous tutor for OhioLINK, your primary role will be to support students throughout the state of Ohio who seek out tutoring, identify topics of confusion, and enhance their understanding and performance. You will provide feedback, answer questions, and guide students towards becoming more proficient and self-assured learners. This position offers flexibility as you will work remotely and interact with students synchronously through weekly, reoccurring, scheduled drop-in sessions as defined by the needs of the program and students we serve.
Responsibilities:
- Provide synchronous online academic support to students in your subject of expertise through real-time interactions and periodic messaging via a chat feature on the platform.
- Assist students in grasping fundamental concepts, theories, and principles related to their coursework, promoting a deeper comprehension of the material.
- Offer constructive feedback and guidance to help students improve their academic performance and understanding of course content.
- Encourage and guide students in developing critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Help students develop effective study strategies and learning techniques that can enhance their academic success.
- Stay informed about current pedagogical approaches and trends in online education, continually updating tutoring methods and resources to ensure effectiveness.
- Maintain accurate records of student interactions, progress, and session summaries, ensuring thorough documentation and reporting for evaluation purposes.
- Collaborate with other eTutors, campus coordinators, and staff to foster a supportive and cohesive online tutoring community, exchanging insights and contributing to improve tutoring services and resources.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, such as mathematics, science, humanities or social sciences (a master's or doctoral degree is a plus).
- Demonstrated experience in tutoring or teaching in a synchronous/online environment and the ability to employ interactive teaching methods to engage and facilitate active learning during real-time sessions.
- Strong command of your specialized subject and exceptional communication skills.
- Proficiency in using virtual communication tools and
platforms for remote tutoring, including video conferencing and online collaboration tools, as well as familiarity with current educational technologies and digital resources applicable to your specialized subject.
- Strong organizational skills to effectively plan and conduct synchronous tutoring sessions and excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to
establish rapport, listen interpretively, and provide constructive feedback.
- Patience, empathy, and adaptability in working with
students of diverse backgrounds and proficiency levels in the subject area.
- Adherence to professional standards and ethical guidelines in tutoring practices, ensuring academic integrity and confidentiality.
- Use of a laptop, headphones, and Internet access that meet the needs of virtual drop-in sessions without interruption.
- A distraction-free, professional working space to conduct drop-in sessions.
- Drop-in session availability that meets the needs of the program and participating students.
- Statement of endorsement by your institution’s campus
coordinator (upon completion of the application process).
- Successful completion
of the training program that includes feedback from the quality assurance coordinator and recommendation for eTutor participation.
- Successful completion of a subject aptitude test.
- Collaboration with other tutors and the program coordinator in order to share insights, exchange best practices, and enhance the overall tutoring program.
