Kick-off Rally - Wednesday, March 20, 2024 @ 12pm
City Hall (near Broadway and Murray St), New York City
Background: In New York City, home attendants–predominantly immigrant women of color–are forced to work sleepless 24-hour shifts, for multiple days in a row. They care for our elderly, disabled, or severely ill loved ones who need 24-hour care. Everywhere else in the world, 24-hour home care work is split into 8- or 12-hour shifts. 24-hour workdays destroy workers’ bodies and families, and endanger patients’ lives.
What's going on: Hundreds of home attendants have been protesting at City Hall every month, demanding an end to the 24-hour workday that robs them of their health and lives. But Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, the leader of the first majority-women City Council, betrays women of color, by refusing to bring the No More 24 Act to a vote. Home attendants and supporters will go on hunger strike starting March 20, demanding an end to the 24-hour workday once and for all.
What you can do: Come and support the hunger strikers! We need people to stay with the strikers around the clock, pass out flyers and talk to people walking by about why they are on hunger strike, raise morale, and help with any on-site logistics! Bring your friends, families, and join the call to demand NO MORE 24!
