We the members of Oberlin's community are saddened by the lack of diversity in the Art History department. Historically, Art History has been a very eurocentric field, and although efforts are made by the community to promote diversity in its study, the limited resources of the department prevent Art History students from experiencing the art of minority groups. Although we have fantastic offerings in East Asian Art, there are no courses available in African Art, a problem which faculty are trying to rectify by requesting a new tenure track position for an African Art Professor. Of the many departments at Oberlin, Art History is behind others in diversity of its offerings. Many Oberlin Art students, through lack of access, are unaware of the Western biases and subjugation of minorities that occurs in Art academia. In this dark hour for the Oberlin Body, it is time to stand up to these failings of our community and fight for equality. For these reasons, we feel it is absolutely necessary for the Art History department to be granted a new tenure track position for the Art of Africa and the African Diaspora.
