Explore Baltimore Heritage 101
Explore Baltimore Heritage 101 is a new online course created by Baltimore Heritage for local historians, students, educators and Baltimore residents interested in learning how to research and write about historic places. We want you to be part of creating this course from the very beginning!

We are planning a series of classes in early 2016 to teach people how to research and write about historic places in Baltimore. The classes are an opportunity to learn new skills and to help shape how we teach future students. Everything we learn will help support a new open online education resource – the Local Preservation School – that we are developing with support from the National Park Service. Please take a few minutes to help plan the course should work and to sign up for future updates. For questions or suggestions, please get in touch with Eli Pousson at 301-204-3337 or pousson@baltimoreheritage.org.

What should Explore Baltimore Heritage 101 teach?
We are creating a wide-ranging collection of tutorials and lessons covering four major themes:

1. Research: How to use digital sources to learn about local history
2. Writing: How to write about historic places for local audiences
3. Visuals: How to combine writing with maps, photos, and graphics
4. Outreach: How to reach local audiences through online engagement and public programs

Our goal is not to teach Baltimore history but to teach you how to be a better researcher, writer, historian or educator for your own city and neighborhood. We want to learn what topics interest you the most!

How should Explore Baltimore Heritage 101 be scheduled?
We know people learn best when they learn as part of a group. In addition to our online course, we are planning a series of classes that will meet in-person in early 2016 to work through an early version of Explore Baltimore Heritage 101 lessons and tutorials.

Participants can expect a mix of discussion, hands-on exercises, and experienced guest speakers. In between each class session, participants can work on independent projects and stay in touch online. We expect to make the course free and provide refreshments at all class sessions. Student projects may be published as stories on Explore Baltimore Heritage or featured as examples for future students using the course.
