YUMI Voices of the City creative writing submission
YUMI's Voices of the City creative writing initiative is putting together a publication for newcomers to York - a guide of sorts that helps people understand that they're not alone in feeling lonely, overwhelmed, included or excluded, happy to have a fresh beginning or longing for something from home. We're looking for submissions from YOU. If you’d rather your piece be anonymous, just let us know.

Whether you were once a newcomer to York, or you've lived here you're entire life, we'd love to hear your stories. Maybe you've helped a refugee settle into your neighbourhood, or you've wandered into the Minster to find solace from the bustle of the tourist season - everyone has a story to tell, and we want to hear it. It might be a poem, some creative non-fiction, a short vignette or just some thoughts. We're looking for pieces between 100 and 1000 words - but take as much or as little space as you need to tell your story.

Feeling a bit lost as to where to begin? Try some of the prompts we've used in our writing session to help you along;
Your first day/month/year in York...
Your favourite place in York...
How did you make York feel like home?
Missing home - what food/feeling/family member/special place do you miss most about home?
The kindness of strangers...
What York needs to make newcomers feel more welcome is...
