ECO is an outdoor, experiential homeschool program serving families in the Metro Atlanta Area. The idea for ECO stems from the forest school model that is offered throughout Europe and parts of the USA. The forest school model is generally only geared towards children in PreK-K. ECO will expand the forest school model to serve older children. My partner and I feel very strongly about immersing children in the outdoors to learn. Through ECO they will learn about and explore nature's wonders through cross curricular, hands on, experiential experiences.
Here are the details we have so far about ECO so you can decide if this forest education program is right for your child:
-ECO Explorers must be in 3rd-5th grade (ages 7/8-12)
-Next Spring will be a preview so the program will be shorter than our regular 16 week program.
-We will meet every Tuesday starting on March 14th - May 9 (8 weeks total no class on April 18th).
-ECO is a drop off program and will meet from 11 am - 3 pm, with a 1/2 hr lunch break. Explorers will need to bring their pre packed lunch with them.
-ECO will meet at the new Providence Park (13440 Providence park Dr, Milton GA 30009 ). This unit is easily accessible from 400, Hwy 9, Hwy 140. This space provides us with everything we need to allow children to explore and learn about the great outdoors. There is access to a creek, a lake, trails, an outdoor amphitheatre and open field area. Since this park has just reopened and is undergoing more renovations we are eager to get the kids involved with helping make this park even better. Some project ideas include adding bird houses, a little library, trail placards, geocaches and more.
-Program tuition for Spring 2017 will be reduced to $100 ($75 off our regular semester tuition price of $175, a sibling discount will be available on regular semester pricing). You will also need to purchase a t-shirt estimated cost will be $10-$15 (unless we receive sponsor funding then the cost will be covered). A yearly tuition option will be offered for Fall 2017-Spring 2018. The yearly fee will be $320 and includes the t-shirt.
-Each child will receive a ECO Explore bag loaded with outdoor exploration goodies (pencils, field guides, magnifying glass, arrow head, nature journal and more)
-Your child's day will follow a similar format every Tuesday: nature journaling, activity, hike/identification, lunch, activity, citizen scientist project, craft, independent exploration. There will be lots of experiential learning and most importantly it will be fun!
-For Spring 2017 the following topics (as of now) will be covered: birds, bats and rodents, plants (seeds, fruits, flowers).
Instructors:ECO instructors are Kathy Balman and Sarah Hunter-Smith. Both instructors are certified outdoor wildlife leaders (project wild, project wet, project learning tree, aquatic wild, growing up wild and flying wild), certified treekeepers and are working towards master naturalist, master birder and adopt a stream certifications. Both instructors will be obtaining certifications in first aid prior to the start of the Spring semester. We will also have an ECO assistant on staff. *By completing this form you are expressing an interest in enrolling in the Spring 2017 ECO Preview Semester. You will be given first notice once enrollment opens and will have 1 week to register your child before we open enrollment to everyone. This form does not lock you into enrolling and does not guarantee your enrollment.
We are still in need of more funding to help offset supply costs, tshirts, etc. Please share the GoFund Me Page with your friends and family www.gofundme/ecoexplorer
Thanks for your interest and we will be in touch soon!
