Daniel Straus: Don't Subpoena Law Students for Speaking Out!

I do not believe that it is appropriate for a NYU Law trustee to serve subpoenas on law students for exercising their First Amendment right to engage in free speech by petitioning their own administration.

Forcing students to turn over emails and other private communications in litigation that does not concern them can chill free speech on campus and make students think twice about raising their voice about controversial issues. This is antithetical to NYU's mission of open academic inquiry and commitment to the public interest.

I support Leo Gertner and Luke Herrine and call on Mr. Straus to withdraw the subpoenas served on them.
