2026-S4 CURRENT LINEUP: A World Still Becoming

About the Exhibition

One brushstroke never set down, one dance never stopped, one world never finished.

When a painting steps outside its frame, what it enters is never just a virtual space — it is the artist's own inner cosmos.

Van Gogh redefined how colour could carry emotion, pushing Post-Impressionism to the threshold of Expressionism. Matisse spent a lifetime proving that line and colour alone could build a complete world, opening the door to Fauvism and shaping the visual language of the entire twentieth century. Čiurlionis, before the West even had a word for "abstraction," was already painting the structure of music onto canvas and is regarded as one of Europe's earliest pioneers of abstract art and visual music.

Separated by generations and borders, all three left a mark on art history that no one after them could paint around. This time, we've chosen three works that each dwell on a page their maker left unturned — not the shape a painting settled into once it was done, but the shape it held while it was still becoming.

On July 29th, 1890, in Auvers-sur-Oise, the painter Vincent van Gogh died by suicide. Marguerite, the daughter of his physician, Dr. Gachet, was one of his last models. The experience starts in the home of Dr. Gachet where Marguerite reminisces about the artist.

She takes the viewer on a journey through his palette of colours and famous works: in Provence, where he nearly lost himself in his quest for the “high yellow note”; the reds and greens of the cafés along the Rhône River; the vivid colours of the night sky; and in the fields of Northern France, where he explored the pure colours of exhilaration and passion.

Henri MATISSE created over 20 paintings exploring the theme of dance. This subject shaped many of his artistic choices, influencing his style and technique. Movement and dance were constant sources of inspiration for the master of color throughout his lifelong work. An immersive, dance-led journey through MATISSE's most iconic works, Dance Dance Dance – Matisse invites viewers to step inside his world. Featuring original choreography by Sarah SILVERBLATT-BUSER, in which the user takes part, the experience pays tribute to the vibrant movements and colors that define his art. This journey into dance and painting grants an intimate view into the creation of some of his greatest masterpieces.

Lithuanian | 2025 | 28 mins  | VR360

Lithuanian painter and composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis was never drawn to the trivial matters of earthly life, but to eternity itself. His creation cycle fuses biblical narrative, nebular cosmology, and Eastern cosmological thought — yet never completes the day humanity was made. The thirteen paintings stop at the fifth day, leaving the final step to whoever walks in. By journey's end, you move from bystander to guardian of a world still unmade.

Wings and Waves: A Special Showcase of Dutch Immersive Content

Curatorial Statement

Wings and Waves is a special showcase of Dutch immersive content at the VR Gallery. Bringing together two Dutch VR works, the programme considers ecological crisis, colonial history, opening a space for audiences in Taiwan and the Netherlands to reflect on nature and history.

”Conversation with A Butterfly” Abner Preis

A digital butterfly guides visitors through a layered world of vivid drawings, childlike imagery and hopeful storytelling. Moving through ecological collapse, displacement, consumerism and climate change, the work invites us to look again at the world and to plant seeds from the past for a shared future. It is a gentle and emotional journey in which beauty and feeling arrive before explanation, allowing meaning to emerge gradually.

”The Miracle Basket” Abner Preis

The Miracle Basket is A VR journey that gives a glimpse into humankind’s recent past told through an intimate childhood story in which mistakes bring change and hope for the future of the planet. By describing the arrival of the west as the downfall of innocence, the VR experience relates to environmental issues of today and political uprising through storytelling.

”Revival Roadshow” Luke Conroy / Nullshima Studio

Netherland | 2025 | 17 mins | English; Mandarin subtitles  | VR Interactive 

This 17-minute satirical VR work unfolds in a fictional museum of the future dedicated to seventeenth-century Dutch VOC explorer Abel Tasman. As the Netherlands sinks beneath rising seas, Tasman is resurrected as a national hero and given a new colonial assignment: to find land for Dutch climate refugees. Combining archival material, AI-generated footage, 2D animation and pop-culture references, the work probes colonial myth-making, climate catastrophe, misinformation, and the structures of power we inherit and continue to reproduce. Each visitor follows a different path through the experience.

This showcase is supported by the Netherlands Office Taipei and SEE NL.

As children are still in a critical period of development, it is recommended that they be over 8-10 years old. Children must be accompanied by their parents when experiencing.

*單次接待人數為7-14人，一次接待時間為1小時／14人，若人數超過將由展場人員協助安排，請觀眾最晚於參觀前2週完成預約。

The number of people allowed per visit in one hour is 7-14.  If the number of visitors exceeds the limit, the staff will assist with arrangements. Visitors are requested to make reservations no later than two weeks before the visit.
