Music-COMP offers a week-long, half-day summer workshop for students with an interest in music composition. The instructor is Erik Nielsen, Senior Mentor with Music-COMP, with extensive experiences as a professional composer, student workshop leader, and school composition artist-in-residence instructor. Erik will guide each student as they explore various composition skills and techniques to develop works suitable for live performance. Students will interact with one another to provide feedback on each others' work. A goal of the week is a completed piece from each student that will be performed by the professional ensemble, The Northern Third Quartet (Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello). The concert will be scheduled for winter following the workshop and take place in VPR Stetson Studio One. Audio and video recordings made for each student composer.
Students will explore various aspects of composition, including harmony, melody, orchestration, and thematic development. Each student will grow from their starting point to develop increasingly sophisticated composition skills and techniques.
