CELL PHONE/ELECTRONIC DEVICE POLICY *
Singing or Ringing in a choir is similar to any other performance discipline; it requires focus and skill. Cell phones and other electronic devices are a huge distraction and take away from your ability to give your full attention to the choir and director.  If your phone or other ED's are not on your person during class, it will never be a distraction for you.  Phones and other ED's should be placed in a music folder slot or left in your backpack. If you chose to keep your phone or ED's on you and you decide to have one out during class, understand that it will be confiscated for the remainder of the class time.  It will also be given to administration for repeat offenders. Understand also that if your phone or ED's are given to an administrator, they will require a parent to visit the school to talk with the principal or vice principal before returning them to you. Cell phones and any ED will not be tolerated in the classroom without teacher permission. Please respect yourself and others and put your electronic devices away during class.
Required
CONCERT/FESTIVAL: ATTENDANCE   *
Choir Concerts and Festivals are required cocurricular activities and satisfy the performance section of the class curriculum.  It is not possible to recreate a concert or festival.  For this reason it is critical that students are in attendance. In the rare case that a student has the need to miss a concert or festival it is imperative that the student and a parent/guardian communicate with Mr. Woolf well before a performance date.

Individual circumstances discussed with Mr. Woolf, will be the determining factor when deciding a students ability to make up full points for a performance missed.   A performance no-show with no parent/guardian communication with Mr. Woolf will result in zero points.

Required
CONCERT/FESTIVAL: POINT RECOVERY
*
IN ORDER TO RECOVER POINTS MISSED FROM A CONCERT OR FESTIVAL, A STUDENT MUST ATTEND AND BE A GOOD AUDIENCE MEMBER OF A CHOIR, BAND OR ORCHESTRA CONCERT, AT THE STUDENT'S GRADE LEVEL OR ABOVE. = 20pts

In addition to attending a fine arts concert, FULL point recovery will need to include ONE of the following assignments. = 20pts

Turn in a concert song list and a song summary that includes your thoughts & emotions you had while listening to each song performed (you may want to record yourself talking softly into a recording device or take notes as a reminder for when you are writing later). The expectation is to write at least one paragraph for each song performed.

- Perform your concert/festival music for Mr. Woolf.  This performance can be done alone, or with a group of your classmates (accompanist will not be provided for singers).  A performance for Mr. Woolf needs to be planned, scheduled and performed by you.  A performance for your family must be recorded and submitted to Mr. Woolf on a Google file.

All point recovery must be completed by the date of the missed concert/festival in order to receive the full previously decided point credit.
Required
PERFORMANCE CALENDAR *
Students are expected to PLAN AHEAD for all scheduled performances.  Concert/Festival information can be found on the classroom white board at least one month before the performance.  Concerts and festivals are planned far ahead and are put on the calendar at the conclusion of the previous school year.  The Choir Calendar is the best tool to stay informed about performance dates. The DHMS and DHHS Choir Calendars can be found on the Desert Hills Choirs Website. https://www.deserthillschoirs.com/

Grading *
EVERY STUDENT STARTS WITH AN "A"
Every student start with an "A" in choir. However, the final grade earned is based on the following criteria.

IN CLASS PARTICIPATION EACH QUARTER = 30pts
Up to two points can be lost each class period for no sheet music, no pencil, chewing gum or poor behavior. One point is automatically lost for having an unexcused tardy, and two points are automatically lost for having an unexcused absence.

IN CLASS PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT = 30pts
This assessment will be of the music learned in class and will be administered by Mr. Woolf and performed by the entire class.  The grading will be based on, concert behavior, memorization and effort.  This assessment will happen weeks before a concert or festival.

OUT OF CLASS CONCERT/FESTIVAL = 40pts Total (per quarter)
Good audience participant for the entire concert = 20pts
Performance with choir = 20pts

Performances are a large portion of the class final grade.  Choir is a performance class.

DHMS (Only) Music Terminology Test = 50pts
All Eighth and Ninth grade students must take a Music Terminology Test during the first quarter of the school year.  This tests is usually administered the first time during the first week of the school year and is not graded.

This test is given twice. There are fifty questions worth one point each.  The first time it is given, students will take the test, self correct the test, and then study the test in and out of classroom for approximately three weeks.  The first test score is recorded to compare start and finish results, and is NOT recorded in the gradebook.  The same exact test will be administered a second time when the class is prepared and ready.  The second time this test is taken, it will be graded and recorded in PowerSchool  by Mr. Woolf.

FESTIVAL ELIGIBILITY
*
Music students learn and perform inside and outside of the classroom.  The region and state festivals fall under the regulations of UHSAA (Utah High School Activities Association).  UHSAA has high standards for participation in state activities.  Washington County School District and Desert Hills holds students to these same standards.  The State Regulations state that a student participating in any extracurricular/cocurricular event is INELIGIBLE if that student has had more than ONE "F" or "Incomplete" for the previous quarter, or a GPA lower than 2.0.  We need every student to be with us at these festivals.  Students, please work hard to ensure that your grades are GREAT in all your classes.  I will help you anyway I can, please make your education the priority.
