MN DEC is proud of the high quality of services provided to young children and their families and recognizes this is the result of the talented and caring professionals working with children, families, and programs throughout the state. MN DEC wants to acknowledge these professionals who make significant differences in the lives of the children, families, and programs. Two awards are presented annually: the Practitioner Award is for the outstanding professional working directly with children and families; and the Leadership Award is to acknowledge the professional who provides  exemplary leadership in the field at the local or state level.

MN DEC encourages nominations of any early childhood professional: ECSE, ECFE, Head Start or preschool teacher or administrator, childcare provider/director or other professional, who has made a difference in the lives of young children with special needs and their families and/or in the lives of their colleagues and who has:
• Performed their job in an exemplary manner
• Made significant contributions or provided leadership that has improved or will improve the lives of young children with special needs and their families
• Demonstrated through their work, evidence of knowledge and skills consistent with recommended practices in the field
• Demonstrated high ethical and professional standards.
