South East Wales River Trust: your river
Help us to protect and improve the rivers of the south Wales Valleys.

The South East Wales River Trust (SEWRT) is a small local charity working to protect and improve the rivers across the former south east Wales industrial valleys. Working with volunteers and alongside local communities and other nature organisations our aim is to improve the health of our waterways bringing benefits to both people and nature alike. 

We have recently received money from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to deliver the Restore Protect and Enhance the Ely Valley (RePrEEV) project and we are keen to work with the people and communities who use, live and work by the river Ely to enrich and nurture a thriving valley and catchment.

This survey is the start of that work and you have been asked to take part because you have a connection to the river catchment. The data collected will be used to inform our work over the next 2 years and you can choose to remain anonymous.

Reporting Pollution
Pollution incidents in Wales should be reported to Natural Resources Wales (NRW) on 0300 065 3000. They operate a 24-hr incident report line and is the preferred route for reporting.

Which of these have you seen by or in your river?
Some of the above species are known as 'Non-native Invasive Species'. These are harmful to the native plants and animals found alongside our rivers. You can read more about  invasive species in rivers on our website. 
The South East Wales River Trust

The South East Wales River Trust carries out a range of work in and around your local rivers. Examples of our work include:

Protection of the river banks

  • Tree planting to provide food, shelter and shading for insects, birds and fish, helping to keep the river cooler on hot days.  Tree roots also help to hold the bank together preventing erosion. 
  • Removal or control of invasive species such as Japanese Knotweed and Himalayan Balsam as they out-compete our native plant species for space on the riverbank. Removing them helps our native species such as Monkshood to grow.

Helping species thrive in the river

  • Improving the habitat for fish and other creatures by the removal of man-made structures and supporting the natural flow of the river. 
  • Helping the natural movement of fish by removing or modifying barriers which stop them from swimming up or downstream. 

Working with local communities

  • Raising awareness of the value of the river environment, the diversity of the habitat and the benefits it can bring.
  • Supporting local communities to access and enjoy the river more than they might have in the past. 
  • Sharing ideas and actions people can take in their workplace, home or garden to support their local river.
  • Providing opportunities for people to contribute to the wellbeing of others and their local environment through activities such as monitoring water quality, species identification and other volunteering activities.
