Tolkien Canonicity and the Fix-It Fic: research survey
Sign in to Google to save your progress. Learn more
What fix-it fic or fics have you written; who were the main characters, contexts, and situation(s) that you "fixed"?
What inspired you to write this fic or these fics: love of character(s), catharsis, dissatisfaction with the outcome of the canon story in question, et cetera? When you completed the story or developed the "WIP", was the need or were those needs fulfilled? Why or why not, do you think? Was there anything else special or memorable that you discovered through the process?
How did readers respond; did you receive any reactions that feel notable and meaningful?
What do you love about Tolkien? What do you love about fan-fiction writing? What about where they intersect? What keeps you writing "fic" within the world of Arda?
Arguably, "fix-it fics" do not erase canon, yet live and breathe alongside them. Do you agree, and why or why not? How important to you is "faithfulness" to canon when writing Tolkien "fic", and why? How does that manifest in your "fix-it fics" and/or your Tolkien fanfic in general?
Do you think you will write more "fix-it fics"? Why or why not?
With respect to Tolkien fan-fiction more broadly, where do you see that phenomenon these days; any notable developments you've observed, things that give you hope, things that concern you, etc? Any thoughts about the contemporary Tolkien fandom and/or reading Tolkien in 2026 that you might want to share, as well?
Please share anything else on this topic that you might have in mind to share!
Are you open to a more extensive, real-time interview (through a phone or video call) on this topic? If so, please also leave your email address so that I can contact you.

Please indicate below if there is anything in the above that you would rather have "off the record' and/or if you would prefer to remain anonymous. (Or, if you just want to share and not have any of it used in the paper, indicate below or email me at kb1moves@gmail.com -- of course fine!)
