Call for Action: I Stand in Support of Building a Food Secure Charlottesville.
Unfortunately, food insecurity and hunger are not new challenges for Charlottesville. Between 2001-2016, the number of households receiving SNAP benefits in Charlottesville increased by 160%. In terms of our city as a whole, 17% or 1 in 6 residents are food insecure and lack access to sufficient quantities of affordable and nutritious foods, a trend that outpaces Virginia’s average of 11.9%.

The need in our city is clear, and now is the time to act. Currently, the City’s 5 year Comprehensive Plan does not include strategies for expanding food access and ending hunger, a prevalent problem. Nor have past plans included this perspective, potentially exacerbating current conditions. Partners in the Charlottesville Food Justice Network (CFJN), are here and ready to support the city in creating this new era, which we feel is urgent in order to achieve healthier schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods for all citizens no matter their race/ethnicity, nationality, gender, religion, neighborhood or zip code. We believe that we can transform our city's food system for the better.

While partners in the Charlottesville Food Justice Network believe in this cause, we need you to stand with us as well. Will you stand in support of building a food secure Charlottesville for all citizens by adding your signature below?
