The Avance Summer Bridge Program at Rio Hondo College is designed to help incoming freshmen make a smooth transition from high school to college. Students will attend a half-day mandatory orientation that includes an introduction to the campus and what the Summer Bridge Program and Math Academy has to offer. Next, students will participate in a two-week Summer Bridge session, along with the Summer Math Academy to prepare them for college-level Math work. Students will learn about a variety of programs (including Honors program, Police Academy, Study Abroad, EOP&S, and MESA) and services such as financial aid, tutoring, the Career Center, and Transfer Center during their Summer Bridge sessions. Students will also work with a Peer Mentor, who is a current student at Rio Hondo College, participating in team-building activities and gaining insight into college life. Students will have the chance to interact with staff and faculty from various departments and disciplines to gain a deeper understanding of what the college has to offer and how the college can help each student succeed. In addition, students who complete the Summer Bridge program and Math Academy will be admitted into the Avance Program, which offers students a dedicated space on campus to study, receive free tutoring, and help from academic coaches and advisers.
The program is free, but students applying for the Summer Bridge Program must be willing to commit to one half-day Mandatory Pre-Session Meeting and a two-week Summer Bridge session, as well as intend to enroll full-time at Rio Hondo College for Fall 2016. Spots are limited, so please apply early. If you have any questions, please email Michael Koger and Maribel De Leon, Summer Bridge Coordinators, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
