The Berkeley REACH is considering putting on a weekend workshop for people who are new to EA to help familiarize them with the ideas, causes, and possible avenues of getting involved with the Effective Altruism community.

This would be a full weekend (Saturday morning through Sunday night) at the Berkeley REACH. Participants would be welcome to sleep over or go home to sleep. We would likely aim for around 10 participants for the first run of the program, and use feedback from that event to decide how to move forward from there.

What topics should be covered?

EA Framework (Neglectedness, Tractability, Importance)

History of EA Movement

Moral Philosophy

Near Term Causes (e.g. Global Poverty and Health, Animal Welfare)

Long Term Future Causes (e.g. X-risks, Longevity)

EA Meta Charities

Cause Prioritization

Career Coaching

EA Volunteer Opportunities

Starting EA Projects

Who do you think should be the audience?

People who have never heard about EA

People who have read a bit and maybe attended a few meetups but haven't changed career trajectory

People who have heard of EA but are skeptical/uncertain about it

People who are already interested in EA but aren't sure how they can have the most impact

People who are early in their careers

Keep in mind that we would be running this in Berkeley and therefore the participants would need to be able to travel to Berkeley for a weekend, though we will have space for some participants to stay overnight at REACH.
