Mother Baby Summit Follow-up Survey

In response to action items identified at this year's Tampa Bay Mother Baby Summit, the Hillsborough County Breastfeeding Task Force plans to engage policy makers to sponsor legislation that supports the civil rights of nursing mothers in the workplace. To meet this objective, the committee needs your help in completing this short survey to identify the best language for nursing mothers in Florida.

In regards to break time, please select which statement provides the best language that supports nursing mothers in the workplace *

Any employee may, at her discretion, express breast milk or breastfeed on site at her workplace during her meal or break period.

An employer shall provide reasonable unpaid break time each day to an employee who needs to express breast milk for her infant child. The break time must, if possible, run concurrently with any break time already provided to the employee. An employer is not required to provide break time under this Section if to do so would unduly disrupt the employer's operations.

An employer shall provide a reasonable break time for an employee to express breast milk for her nursing child for 1 year after the child’s birth each time such employee has need to express the milk

The employer shall make reasonable efforts to provide a room or other location in close proximity to the work area, other than a toilet stall, where the employee can express her breast milk in privacy. The employer shall be held harmless if reasonable effort has been made to comply with this subsection.

An employer shall provide a place, other than a bathroom, that is shielded from view and free from intrusion from coworkers and the public, which may be used by an employee to express breast milk

An employer shall make a reasonable effort to provide a private, secure and sanitary room or other location in close proximity to the work area, other than a toilet stall, where an employee can express her milk or breastfeed her child.

In regards to civil right violations, please select which statement provides the best language that supports nursing mothers in the workplace. *

It shall be an unlawful discriminatory practice for any employer or labor organization to refuse to hire or employ, or to bar or discharge from employment, or withhold pay, demote or penalize a lactating employee because an employee breastfeeds or expresses milk at the workplace.

An employer that employs less than 50 employees shall not be subject to the requirements of this subsection, if such requirements would impose an undue hardship by causing the employer significant difficulty or expense when considered in relation to the size, financial resources, nature, or structure of the employer’s business.

An employer who violates any provision of this chapter shall be subject to a civil penalty in the amount of one hundred dollars for each violation.

Thank You for Supporting Nursing Mothers in the Workplace

As a recap, on April 19th over 50 members of local organizations contributed to increasing awareness about the 2011 Surgeon General's Call to Action for supporting breastfeeding. We thank everyone in attendance in identifying solutions and action items in order to mobilize current national and state initiatives to answer the call to action in our community!
