About the Event:
Africa is undergoing a profound digital transformation but it is constrained by a critical barrier: energy poverty. Over 600 million people still lack access to reliable electricity. Without clean and affordable energy, the continent cannot unlock the full potential of its digital economy, health systems, education, or industrial development. Yet, the continent is rich in renewable energy resources, entrepreneurial talent, and untapped innovation capacity. What’s urgently needed is investment—in research, local innovation, and scalable solutions tailored to Africa’s unique energy needs. Too often, global narratives around energy transition focus on hardware deployment. But without investment in African research institutions, startups, and innovators, clean energy systems will remain externally driven, expensive, and misaligned with local realities.
This side event will explore how targeted financing and innovation ecosystems can unlock homegrown clean energy solutions, ensuring that Africa’s energy transition is not only green and inclusive, but African-led.
Expected OutcomesIncreased visibility for African-led innovation in clean energy New partnerships and commitments to fund R&D and startups Identification of enabling policies for innovation ecosystems Cross-sector dialogue on accelerating inclusive, just energy solutions.
