NOTES OF CAUTION ABOUT SCUBA
- The risk of holding your breath
- Air depletion
- The risk of decompression sickness
- Separation
- Panic
- Boat traffic
- The risk of holding your breath: as you go up air in your lungs expands and can rupture your lungs. Keep breathing and avoid holding your breath to eliminate this risk.
- Air depletion: Avoid running out of air by regularly checking your supply and by keeping a reserve of 50 bar (750 psi)
- Decompression sickness: Caused by nitrogen bubbles in the blood. Every diver is exposed to this risk, even if you follow all the rules, it can still happen. Reduce the risk by: 1) Going up no faster than 10 meter per minute 2) always make a three-minute safety stop at 5 meter. 3) Dive according to your tables. 4) Be hydrated. 5) Don't drink alcohol before Scuba. 6) Be well rested. 7) Avoid breathing excessively at depth. 8) Avoid flying, mountaineering, freediving and heavy exercise after scuba. 9) Stay fit. 10) Get checked for a PFO
- Separation: In case you run out of air your buddy has your emergency supply. It's a good habit to stay no more than one arm reach away from your buddy, especially when you're diving in low visibility. In case you lose your buddy look around for 1 minute, then go up.
- Panic: Many dive injuries start with panic. Learn swimming and freediving before scuba, keep practicing all your skills and drills in a safe place un till you can do them blind folded in a repeatable fashion
- Boat Traffic kills divers every year. Reduce the risk by not surfacing in mid water without a marker. During the dive stay deep enough to not be at risk.
