2013-14 Green Store Rotational Internship Application
Green Store (greenstore.stanford.edu) is an online store that sells eco-friendly products (e.g., recyclable cups, Smart Strips, eco-friendly laundry detergent) to the campus community at break-even cost. The Store delivers products to customers in order to make environmentally-friendly products as accessible as possible.

Green Store has four primary officers (Business Development, Marketing & Outreach, Finances & Operations Analytics, and Operations Management), and each officer will have a team of three to four interns. Interns, although initially assigned to work with one of the four officers, will "rotate" through different teams over the course of the year, eventually working with all of the officers and learning about the various roles and business concepts constituting the Store. The purpose of this intern program is two-fold: (1) to educate students about various business skills and sustainability, and (2) to cultivate interest in and commitment to the store. For descriptions of each of the four teams, please see below, under "Short Answer Questions."

Interns will also contribute to Green Store’s operations and customer service by assisting with deliveries. Each of the four teams will have delivery shifts throughout the year (deliveries are handled only once per week, and each team will have two to three delivery shifts per quarter (i.e., conduct deliveries on only two or three given days in any given quarter)). Interns not only will learn essential skills from Green Store, but also will be crucial to the success of Green Store on an operational level.

This application is due Friday, November 22.

Green Store Team Descriptions

Business Development: This team is dedicated to store development and improvement, which will primarily involve idea creation and brainstorming. The team will focus on (1) expanding and/or improving the Store's product line, (2) improving the Store’s distribution channels, and (3) brainstorming ways to improve operations (e.g., changing the Store's delivery model). The team will work with other teams to ensure that ideas approved by all are executed from start to finish.

Marketing & Outreach: This team will work to (1) improve Green Store’s name recognition on campus and (2) increase students’ awareness of the store’s offering of eco-friendly products and its availability as a resource for sustainable living. The team will update the Store’s social media outlets (e.g., Facebook page and website) and create advertisements for the Store’s products. For outreach, the team will lead recruiting efforts in the spring (for both intern and officer positions), as well as contact groups on campus (e.g., row houses, faculty, program departments, student groups, party planners) to encourage purchasing from the Store and ultimately expand the Store's customer base.

Finances & Operations Analytics: This team is dedicated to data management and the Store's financial matters. The team will apply for funding if necessary; create, modify, and manage the Store's budget; and ensure that the leadership team is aware of all expenses and the Store's financial state. The team also will be responsible for keeping track of all Store sales and customers in a database.

Operations Management: This team maintains the Store's external relationships by managing customer service and ordering products from manufacturers and other similar entities. The team will ensure that customers receive their products and deliveries run smoothly (a potential project could be to establish a delivery confirmation system), and it will relay customer complaints or concerns, or any operational issues, to the rest of the Store leadership. The team also will review inventory data (prepared by the Finances & Operations Analytics Team) and restock inventory (as well as order inventory of new products).
