If inquiring about joining a combo, let us know your availability. We have morning, afternoon and evening "coached" combos, Monday's thru Thursday's. We can't promise you a slot at your preferred time, but we try to accommodate schedules where we can.

***For new students to the workshop interested in joining an instrumental or vocal combo, please email (djazzworkshop@gmail.com) a phone recording thats representative of your jazz playing level. Choose a common jazz standard/songbook tune like Autumn Leaves, Four and/or a blues like Blue Monk, Tenor Madness etc. You can record unaccompanied or with a backing track. The recording should NOT be overly thought about or produced. Quick and imperfect is good :)

Horn/violin/flute players: Play the melody, then improvise for one chorus

Piano/guitar: Play the melody for a chorus, comp as if accompanying a soloist for one chorus, then improvise for a chorus

Bass: play the melody for a chorus, then walk a bass line through the progression for a chorus.

Drums: play 30sec examples of different feels. Medium swing, Bossa nova, 3/4, Ballad, Uptempo swing.

Vocalists: just sing one chorus. unaccompanied or with backing track is ok.
