The CS&OS CoP has been asked by UNESCO to help create a response from the global citizen science community on those aspects of the Recommendation which are concerned with "Open engagement of societal actors" and Open dialogue with other knowledge systems" We are calling for members of the CS&OS CoP, but also inviting people from other areas, concerned with opening science to society, to join us in developing this response.
The timescale for the first phase of this work will be October - December 2022, with the results to be presented at the World Science Forum. We expect the report from this work will also generate a reference paper, with contributors as co-authors.
The challenge we have is to undertake the necessary gathering of information and to develop documentation which can be offered to all the 193 signatory countries to support their action plans towards realising the Open Science Recommendation.
There are three themes which we have been asked to work on. We ask that you indicate *which* of these themes you will be interested in contributing to:
Theme one: Creating a common, functional vocabulary and conceptualization of open engagement with societal actors, including citizen science. Within this theme, we would like to include museums and science centres (ASTC https://www.astc.org/ in the USA, ECSITE in Europe etc.) as well as people who are doing deliberative processes, such as citizen’s assemblies.
Theme two: Showcasing practical examples of success: What do supportive enabling conditions look like? What does a successful initiative look like, in which context? This includes examples of citizen science and other forms of engagement of societal actors in science. Repositories of case studies can be reused for this purpose.
Theme three: Identifying principles for initiating, nurturing/sustaining and (potentially) monitoring open engagement, citizen science, etc. This task will require data collection and synthesis with people in different regions, and the report from that can be turned into a paper.
As time is very short, please complete this form by Sunday, 18 September 2022, to register your interest to participate in this global collaboration.
Please block your agenda for the kick off meeting on Wednesday, 21 September 2022, 12 noon CEST.
