BackyardBio 2023 Registration
Register your classroom here to take part in the BackyardBio global nature campaign May 1-31st, 2023!

All month long get your kids outside and see the benefits of outdoor education with purpose, encouraging your class to go exploring looking for local wildlife of all kinds, documenting what they find. Through social media with #backyardbio, the use of the INaturalist and Seek Apps, and through the direct international classroom connections we'll be making happen through this registration you'll have ample opportunity to connect with others worldwide on a student led journey of nature discovery!

Registering is a commitment to either:
A) Get your kids outdoors as a group during the month of May together looking for wildlife
B) Assigning students the task of documenting local wildlife at home or in the local area with the purpose of having a follow up with the class to discuss and share their findings

Get regular updates about the campaign, learning more about how you can take part and seeing resources you can use to keep the excitement going!

This campaign is an effort of Exploring By The Seat of Your Pants and has been inspired by the Nature For All movement worldwide!

We'd like to be paired with other classrooms to share our BackyardBio finds and experiences! *
Any classroom that chooses 'yes' will be connected via email with 2-3 other groups of similar age worldwide. This is a commitment to share some of your pictures of local wildlife with those partner groups - be it through a shared google folder, a video class call, or some other means

Details will be provided on options for connecting once you're in the groups! 85% of registered groups did so last year and it was far and away the highlight of our year at EBTSOYP to see kids become the experts in sharing and revelling in local wildlife

Ways of getting involved!
There are three basic ways of taking part in BackyardBio!

1. Share what you find on social media with #backyardbio - snap a pic of local wildlife of all kinds, and show your class in action exploring their schoolyards, backyards or local nature areas

2. The Seek and INaturalist apps! Seek is the go to tool for learning about local species. Download the app at https://www.inaturalist.org/pages/seek_app , snap photos and learn more about wildlife near you while gaining kid friendly incentives for more discoveries. Perfect for ages 5-13!

INaturalist is more in depth, and provides the opportunity to contribute your class observations to a global database for real citizen science! Check it out and join our project at https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/backyardbio-2023  - best for students 13+ and classroom teachers only for younger groups. All submissions shared here will be linked so you can see what local wildlife looks like around the world!

3. Connect with eachother! Set up a video call with your partnered classrooms! Make flipgrid videos highlighting local species. Challenge eachother to find more kinds of creature. Make a google sheet to track findings. There's no limit on how you can share your love of nature globally with one another
