Excel ACT Tutoring and Mentoring Program Calvin Student Information Form: Fall Session 2012

The Excel ACT Tutoring and Mentoring Program is coordinated by the offices of pre-college programs and the service-learning center at Calvin College serving students from the following public school districts: Grand Rapids (Central, Creston, Grand Rapids Montessori, Ottawa Hills and Union), Wyoming, Godfrey-Lee, and Kentwood as well as Potter’s House Christian. Up to 40 students (grades 10-12) in each semester (fall and spring) are able to participate in a five-week session in which Calvin students provide mentoring and tutoring assistance for the ACT, a standardized achievement examination for college admissions in the United States. CCE credit may be earned through participation in this program.

Calvin and high school students meet up to two days a week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays) for up to two hours per week after school (4:00 – 5:30 p.m.). Time is dedicated to covering specific subject matter included on the ACT: English, math, reading, science, and writing. At the end of each five-week session, the pairs and triads (in addition to the pre-college students’ parents) are honored through a celebration. The goals of the program include:
- Increased understanding of the ACT
- Increased confidence with taking the ACT
- Better student performance on the ACT
- A broader understanding of the college setting and the necessary steps for successful college entry
- Increased students perception of themselves as prospective college students
