Israel’s main energy source is coal. After Colombia (which supplied 70% of Israel’s coal) cut exports in 2024, Israel turned to Australia and South Africa.
Australia exported 136,362 tonnes of coal to Israel in 2024, up 20% that year, worth almost $30 million.
In 2024, the ship Captain Veniamis left Newcastle loaded with coal bound for Hadera, home to Israel’s largest power station, Orot Rabin.
South African coal now makes up almost half of Israel’s imports, but workers and unions there are fighting back with a coal embargo campaign, showing that resistance is possible.
This trade directly violates the International Court of Justice ruling requiring states to prevent support for Israel’s occupation and genocide.
Glencore, the world’s largest mining company, is driving this trade, exporting coal from NSW’s Hunter Valley through Newcastle Port, and from South Africa too.
The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement is calling for a global energy embargo on Israel. We can make that real here by blocking Newcastle Port, the world’s largest coal export hub.
