Volunteer Opportunities and Management

We need your help solving problems. This requires the remote assistance of volunteers just like you. How can we tell you we have a need? What format are you most comfortable responding in? What are our existing volunteer opportunities?

Johnny's rant about Volunteer Management (optional read).

When we need remote help with something, how should I ask? Is a Blog/FaceBook/Twitter post enough for the initial request? I don't think so. I'm tempted to go with a Google group, or something, but do we have one group? Multiple? How should it be organized? One complaint in the past was that some volunteers refused to maintain a Google account(!) so they couldn't help out even if they wee willing. If we go with a Google group, and post the initial question to, say, Twitter how do we keep people from responding to the Twitter request and instead just go to the group? If we need to shovel responses from Twitter to Google groups, we're not being efficient? What about canned "volunteer management apps"? See, so many questions, and no answers. This is like a full stop with engaging volunteers. When I have a question, I want volunteers batting around the responses, and helping to focus on a solution when I go down a road and hit a roadblock. How do we manage all the responses? One request on all these outlets can result in a dozen responses across all the networks. This is not collaboration. The request will set me on a path of trying things, and when they don't work or I run into problems, I'm back to the networks where respondents again reply on that network, oblivious to responses on other networks. So a FaceBook response that clashes with a Twitter response leaves us back at ground zero. What about the Volunteer Network? It seems like that was a flop. And even if we migrated to it, we can't really manage multiple responses and multiple volunteers on one project.

    Volunteer Opportunities

Below you will find a current list of volunteer opportunities. Remote work can be done from anywhere but qualified candidates must be able to adequately explain and troubleshoot everything clearly, step-by-step. Local work requires travel to Uganda. All candidates must have hands-on working knowledge of solutions.
