VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
(All programs are in-person)

ONE-TO-ONE TUTOR: After completing three training workshops (three 3-hour sessions) to fully prepare you for this rewarding volunteer role, you will be matched with an adult learner in your area.  You and your learner will  meet weekly and work together to accomplish your learner's specific personal and professional goals. This is a 1.5 to 2-hour weekly commitment for one year or 100 tutoring hours, whichever comes first.  We welcome new tutors twice a year:  in spring and fall.  Training workshops are scheduled in March and October.

CONVERSATION GROUP FACILITATOR: After being trained in a three-hour workshop, you will co-facilitate weekly group meetings to help intermediate/high intermediate English learnerslearners practice their speaking fluency and conversation skills. This is a weekly, 2-hour commitment for a minimum of three months.
THREE LOCATIONS IN NEED OF FACILITATORS:  Belmont, Billerica, and Tewksbury

BEGINNER ENGLISH CO-TEACHER (in person):  To meet the increasing demand for Beginner level English instruction, English At Large is broadening its Beginner English program to serve more communities in our service area.  We currently offer free in-person Beginner English classes in four communities in our service area:  Acton, Medford (at Tufts University), Wakefield, and Belmont.  English At Large has developed a full academic year curriculum of basic English survival and communication skills, with teaching notes included.  The 90-minute classes meet twice weekly for 10- to 12-week semesters, and are co-taught by pairs of EAL volunteers.  Each co-teacher teaches with their assigned partner one day a week, for one or two semesters.  Teaching experience is not required for this position, but teachers should have a moderate comfort level navigating Google Slides and internet technology.

**** NEW VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY *****  Waitlist management volunteer (at EAL Woburn office)
This is a flexible position that is a huge support to our staff.  Volunteers conduct screening calls with learners on the tutoring waitlist.  This is an initial 5-10 minute screening call to confirm learner eligibility for the program, and to move learners forward to the final stage of the tutoring program waiting list.  Volunteers follow a script and enter  learner information on a Google form.  Medium level of comfort with Google forms and excel spreadsheets is helpful.

CAREER ACCESS LAB (CAL) VOLUNTEER: CAL volunteers help learners enrolled in the CAL program to develop their career readiness and workplace skills.  During the 15-week program, volunteers mentor learners during Mock Interview events and Resume Review sessions, and lend their expertise on a variety of workplace topics (e.g., crafting a professional introduction, networking, and building a LinkedIn profile). CAL volunteers choose their mentoring role, and commit to 2-3 hours per event.  ***IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT THE EAL AMERICORPS PROGRAM:  EFFECTIVE AUGUST 31, 2025, THE NEW AMERICAN INTEGRATION (NAIP) AMERICORPS PROGRAM WILL END.  ENGLISH AT LARGE IS EXPLORING OTHER ORGANIZATIONS TO JOIN AS A HOST SITE.  WE ANTICIPATE THAT OUR NEXT CAREER ACCESS LAB SESSION WILL BE OFFERED AGAIN IN 2027***

INTAKE ASSESSOR: After attending a three-hour training class, you will interview prospective learners who are waiting to join the tutoring program, test their English level, and write a short summary of your interview.  You will also conduct a short exit interview with learners as they graduate from the tutoring program. This is a flexible role that requires a minimum of five learner interviews per intake cycle.  The information gathered during the interview is shared with the tutor, to help them find a starting point for instruction with their new learner.

BEST PLUS SPEAKING/LISTENING STANDARDIZED TEST ASSESSOR: Best Plus test assessors meet with learners at the start and completion of their tutoring to administer a 15-minute standardized speaking test that measures speaking proficiency level.  Volunteer Assessors attend a SABES training and complete a certification test.  Tests are administered during the learner's tutoring session at area libraries, within a comfortable travel radius. This flexible volunteer role involves personal interaction with learners of all levels, and requires a friendly demeanor and ability to put learners at ease.

Special Projects
OFFICE VOLUNTEER:  Lend your organizational and office skills to support our small staff, on a flexible schedule.  Office projects are varied and may include tasks such as database maintenance, learner phone calls, printing of instructional materials,  EAL lending library maintenance, volunteer event preparation, or helping our staff with mailings. 

LANGUAGE INTERPRETER (occasional need):   Many of our learners are in the early stages of their English journey and need interpretation during the application and intake process. This is a flexible role that may include conducting eligibility calls by telephone, supporting intake and English language assessments, and translating written communications. Interpreters should be proficient in English and a second language. Priority languages include Arabic, Chinese, French, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.

EVENTS VOLUNTEER: Do you want to help out, but aren’t able to make a weekly commitment? Events volunteers lend a hand at our volunteer, learner, community and fundraising events. Typical actives include staffing a registration table to welcome volunteers at EAL conference, appreciation, graduation, and other events, or being part of the venue set-up/clean-up team.

GRAPHIC DESIGN VOLUNTEER: Do you have expertise in Adobe Photoshop, Publisher, or Illustrator? Help English At Large create up-to-date marketing materials and publications.

FUNDRAISING AND MARKETING VOLUNTEER: Help us grow to serve more newcomers by conveying why English At Large is important in your community through fundraisers and grants.
