In my clinical work I’ve spent the last fifteen years working with men and women struggling with unwanted sexual behaviors and navigating the heartache of betrayal trauma. The Betrayal Trauma Workshop is designed to help women understand the story of betrayal not only in their relationship, but throughout their life story.
Why am I offering this workshop?
- When we are betrayed, Broca’s area, one of the speech centers in the brain goes offline. When Broca’s area is not working, we cannot put our thoughts and feelings into words. One of the greatest gifts a group offers is to hear the experiences of other women who are processing their betrayals. When we hear another person’s story, this helps us to find language for our experiences too.
Research has looked at humiliating marital events (HMEs), such as a partner’s infidelity on the affect/mood of 25 women who recently experienced an HME and 25 in a control group. While both groups reported similar marital discord levels, HME participants were six times more likely to be diagnosed with a major depressive disorder than controls. Therefore, this workshop is designed to guide you to find grief and anger for the ways betrayal sets up a whole host of mental health difficulties. In grief, we open our hearts and bodies to the possibility of comfort.
When trauma happens to us, it’s natural to want to develop an external locus of control. In other words, we can try to control the world around us rather than learning to befriend the pain and heartache in our body. This workshop will guide you to develop an internal locus of control through learning to regulate your nervous system and offer hospitality to the hurt you’re feeling.
