Trauma-Informed Writing Course

This 8-week, trauma-informed writing course is led by Ren Dara Santiago and Marissa Ghavami.

Designed to help work through writer’s block and tackle tough topics with a trauma-informed practice for writers of any level working on scripts and prose.

What to expect:

  • Group check ins, sharing challenges & intention setting
  • Psycho-education on trauma, the nervous system & how it can impact us as artists
  • Meditative tools to help work through blocks & encourage flow state
  • Journaling prompts & guided exercises that encourage writers to cultivate new instincts within themselves, their narratives & their characters
  • Building a process that integrates methods to write about trauma in a more supported way
  • Sharing ideas & resources for trauma-informed audience impact
  • Built-in writing time & the option to share your work in a nurturing environment
This course is $600, meeting virtually for 2 hours a week for 8 weeks.
Space is limited - capped at 6 students per class! First come, first served.
$50 deposit to secure your spot! (non-refundable but applied towards course; payment plans available)

Dates: March 15 - May 9 
6:30-8:30 pm est Wednesdays or 2:30-4:30 pm est Saturdays

About us:

Ren Dara Santiago (they/them) has taught playwriting to varied experience levels for 8 years & the lead playwright faculty at the National Theater Institute for the last five years. Ren is Filipino/Puerto Rican & the eldest of 4 from Yonkers & Harlem. Winner of the Dramatist Guild's Lanford Wilson Award, TOW Fellowship, MCC Alumni Award, Playwright’s Week at The Lark, a finalist for the National Playwrights Conference, and the inaugural recipient of Rising Phoenix Rep’s Cornelia Street American Playwriting Award. Plays include The Big Bad, The Siblings Play, Something in the Balete Tree, Subliminal, I’ll Write You Down in Brick & Mortar, Gods Play. Ren was staff-writer for the Showtime Series Let the Right One In and head-writer for the iHeartMedia series See You In Your Nightmares. Ren has taught for Carnegie Mellon, Future Perfect Project, Theater Makers, The National Theater Institute at The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, Lincoln Center Theater, Williams College University, & The Young Women’s Leadership School.

Marissa Ghavami (she/they) is an Iranian-American, queer actor, singer, voice over artist, producer, public speaker and coach based in NYC. She is the Founder of the nonprofit Healing TREE (Trauma Resources, Education & Entertainment) which she led as Executive + Artistic Director for 11 years. Under her direction, Healing TREE collaborated with several of the world’s leading trauma experts and internationally renowned artists, as well as partnered with Aetna, which is under the CVS (Fortune 5) umbrella. As an artist, she has worked alongside Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony nominees and winners, performing across theatre, film and television. Public speaking highlights include engagements for NYU Tisch, The Mighty, the Amen Clinic, The National Child Traumatic Stress Network, Rattlestick Playwrights Theater and a “Trauma and the Performing Artist” workshop alongside the renowned Dr. Peter Levine.
