IN ANITA'S WAKE (USA, Vicki Nantz, 2010, 49 min)—This recently released documentary looks back at the hysteria surrounding the 1977 homophobic crusade of Anita Bryant, and the resulting adoption statute passed by the Florida Legislature, which outlawed gay and lesbian adoption based solely on their sexual orientation. Featured in the film are parents and children who fought to save their families from a Florida government that for 33 years prohibited gay and lesbian parents from providing a permanent, loving home to children who were languishing in foster care.

SILENCE IS DEATH: UNHEARD VOICES (USA, 2010, Chay Johnson, 45 min)—Johnson shines the light upon the issues of gay Black men and the problems that lead to the highest rates of HIV infection of all social groups. The film scrutinizes the role played by Black churches in stifling the discussion of AIDS by refusing to acknowledge the sexuality of some of its people.

CITY OF BORDERS (U.S. 2009, 66 minutes, Director: Yun Suh)—In the heart of Jerusalem stands an unusual symbol of unity that defies generations of segregation, violence and prejudice: a gay bar called Shushan. City of Borders goes inside the vibrant community at the only gay bar in Jerusalem where people of opposing nationalities, religions and sexual orientations create a sanctuary among people typically viewed as each other’s “enemy.” The documentary intimately portrays the daily lives of the Israeli bar owner and four Israeli and Palestinian patrons as they navigate the minefield of politics, religion and discrimination to live and love openly. Set against the construction of the separation wall between Israel and the Palestinian territories and the struggle for a gay pride parade in Jerusalem, these five inter-woven stories reveal the contradictions and complexities in the struggle for acceptance.
