BookPALS (October-May)
Become a reading mentor and make a lasting difference in a child’s life! As a reading mentor, you’ll work with small groups of 2nd and 3rd graders, helping them build confidence, discover the joy of reading, and reach grade-level proficiency by the end of 3rd grade, a crucial milestone for future success.

You’ll meet with students right in their schools across Washtenaw or Wayne County, forming meaningful connections and sharing the power of stories. BookPALS meet twice a month during the school day. Sessions usually last between 1-2 hours depending on the school.

Virtual BookPALS (October-May)
Help spark a love of reading—right from your own home! As a Virtual BookPAL, you’ll mentor small groups of 2nd and 3rd graders, encouraging them as readers and helping them build the skills they need to be proficient by the end 3rd grade.

Sessions take place on Zoom, Mondays & Tuesdays from 5:00–6:00 or 6:00–7:00 pm, making it a flexible way to give back after the school day. This is a weekly, semester-long opportunity where you’ll see your students grow in confidence, ability, and joy as readers—all thanks to your support.

Read With Kids (October-May)
Bring the joy of reading to life for our youngest learners! As a Read With Kids volunteer, you’ll work with children in PreK–1st grade, either one-on-one or in small groups. Volunteers serve as reading mentors—sharing stories, introducing children to books, leading fun literacy activities, and sparking a lifelong love of reading.

This program takes place in the mornings at two Ypsilanti Early Learning Centers and runs weekly throughout the school year. It’s a wonderful opportunity to build relationships with children, nurture their curiosity, and make a lasting impact during these important early years of learning.

Family Literacy Interactive Program (FLIP) (October-May)
Be part of a fun and meaningful evening that brings families together around the joy of reading! As a FLIP volunteer, you’ll help create a welcoming environment by greeting families, running hands-on literacy activities, and sharing books for children to take home.

FLIP nights are held at local Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor elementary schools, and your support helps make them special, memorable events. This is a flexible opportunity—you can volunteer for just one night or join us for multiple sessions throughout the year! This is great for large groups of volunteers as well!

Reading Stars, Readers Theater (June-August)
Help kids shine on stage! As a Reading Stars volunteer, you’ll mentor students as they bring stories to life—developing a production from start to finish. Volunteers support kids as they write their own scripts, practice lines, and design scenery, props, and costumes.

This is a unique opportunity to combine literacy with creativity, teamwork, and performance. Volunteers commit to a full summer session (2 weeks 9am - 12pm), ensuring the children have the guidance and encouragement they need to grow as readers, performers, and confident storytellers.
