We, the Endowment Justice Coalition, are filing a complaint with the Connecticut Attorney General to investigate Yale's investments in fossil fuels. Yale has made a commitment to “improving the world today and for future generations.” Yet they financially support and profit from an industry that imperils all of us.
Yale’s investments in the fossil fuel industry aren’t just immoral, they’re illegal. The Yale Corporation has a legal responsibility, as a non-profit institution, to invest with the university's charitable purposes & mission in mind. The practice of bankrolling planetary arson, causing mass suffering, is irreconcilable with that mission.
We are asking Attorney General William Tong to investigate the Corporation’s conduct and issue an explicit directive to divest. We’re doing so as members of the Fossil Free 5 coalition of leading universities —, MIT, Princeton, Stanford, Vanderbilt and of course Yale — at which students, alumni & community members are demanding a just and immediate transition to a fossil-free future. Yale is the most influential institutional investor in higher education, and this complaint has the potential to be enormously impactful, reshaping networks of global capital away from environmental destruction. Divestment is a crucial first step, and it’s one we can take only by demonstrating the consensus of our community on the urgency of climate action. Every voice counts, so add yours to the call for climate justice and transparency.
