The
Climate Guardian initiative is a UNICEF Maldives program empowering young people aged 16-24 to address climate and environmental challenges. This program serves as a platform for youth to collaborate, take ownership, and drive meaningful change. The Climate Guardian cohorts are currently running in
Addu,
Kulhudhuffushi,
Fuvahmulah,
Laamu, and the
Male' Central Region.
Objectives
Equip young people with the tools, knowledge, and experiences necessary to take ownership and drive climate action in their communities and beyond.Amplify youth voices and perspectives on climate and environmental issues, ensuring they are heard, represented, and recognized as key stakeholders in policymaking and grassroots-level initiatives.Empower youth-led climate solutions, action, and advocacy, fostering young people's leadership in driving sustainable change.Foster collective action by strengthening and expanding youth cohorts, creating a unified front to mainstream climate and environmental issues across communities and platforms.
Action Points for Climate GuardiansAs Climate Guardian you will:
- Build Leadership and Networks: Connect with like-minded young people and organizations to expand community collaboration.
- Conduct Community Consultations: Identify and address key climate and environmental issues.
- Support Programs: Contribute to the design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of climate initiatives.
- Drive Advocacy: raise awareness and increase climate education by accumulating valuable data and creating meaningful content.
- Foster Change: Lead discussions and campaigns to inspire and mobilize your community.
Meetings and CommunicationsRegular (virtual and in-person) meetings will be supported by the UNICEF team to hold discussions, coordinate efforts, and track progress. Primary communication will occur through the
Climate Guardians WhatsApp Community, with additional updates via email and social media channels.
