Why Boycott Eden Foods?
Wheatsville Food Co-Op’s mission is to “create a self-reliant, self-empowering community of people that will grow and promote a transformation of society toward cooperation, justice, and non-exploitation.” With this in mind, we are asking Wheatsville’s leadership and owners to end the store’s affiliation with Eden Foods and Eden Organic.
Many people are familiar with the recent Supreme Court ruling in the Hobby Lobby case, which ruled in favor of for-profit corporations over their workers’ individual rights to obtain access to health care. Eden Foods is another entity who seeks to undermine workers’ access to birth control. Several media outlets including Salon.com have covered Eden’s lawsuit which sought to exempt itself to cover birth control in its employees’ health insurance plans.
By signing this petition we are speaking out against companies who actively use its profits to control the bodies of its workers, and are requesting that a Co-Op vote be placed on the ballot to officially boycott all Eden Foods products.
If Wheatsville’s board and its owners seek to create a "society toward cooperation, justice, and non-exploitation,” then permanently removing Eden Foods as supplier until they change their position is a step in the right direction to remain true to that mission.
