Thank you for reaching out to TLDEF's Name Change Project. We assist in connecting low-income transgender people with law firms that provide them with pro bono (free) legal representation for name changes in the cities listed below.
If you are a low-income transgender and/or non-binary person in need of a name change and live in one of the participating cities below, please fill out this form.
The information you submit via this form will be considered by TLDEF in matching you with a cooperating law firm. It will only be shared with cooperating law firms who we have determined may be able to assist you in changing your name. Except for providing your information to cooperating law firms, TLDEF will keep the information you share with us confidential.
In addition to meeting income-eligibility guidelines, project participants MUST LIVE IN one if the following cities or counties to participate in the project:
Atlanta, Georgia Chicago, IL - Cook County Detroit, MI - Wayne, Oakland and Washtenaw Counties Milwaukee, WI - Milwaukee County New Jersey - Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Middlesex Counties New York City - All five boroughs/counties (New York, Kings, Queens, Richmond and Bronx) Philadelphia, PA - Philadelphia County Pittsburgh, PA - Allegheny County
YOU MAY ONLY FILL OUT THIS FORM YOURSELF OR ON BEHALF OF A MINOR CHILD
TLDEF can only accept requests for legal representation directly from the person seeking legal assistance. However, if you are the parent, guardian or "next friend" of a transgender youth, you may fill out this form on their behalf.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I SUBMIT THIS FORM?
Once you submit this form, TLDEF will review it and advise you via telephone whether we are able to match you with a cooperating law firm. At that time, we may request other information required for your representation. TLDEF tries to respond to all legal assistance requests on a first come, first serve basis.
It will take up to 15-20 business days for you to receive a response once you submit the form. This response will arrive either by phone, e-mail, or text message. Once you have received a response and an intake has been completed, there may be additional waiting time prior to the beginning of representation.
NO LEGAL REPRESENTATION BY TLDEF
Filling out this form does not establish a lawyer-client relationship with TLDEF. TLDEF does not take on name change clients directly, but operates the Name Change Project in partnership with private law firms and corporations in the above-listed cities and counties. If TLDEF determines that you are eligible for assistance by a private law firm or corporation, you will be represented by your assigned firm for your name change only. If you do not live in one of these jurisdictions, the lawyers we work with will be unable to assist you with your name change.
