EWOCC 2018: YOUTH CREATIVE WRITING CONTEST
The 2018 Empowering Women of Color Conference is hosting a youth creative writing contest! This year, we are inviting youth to submit a creative writing piece (essay, poem, or short story) that reflects on the themes of EWOCC 2018. Our theme this year is Free Space, Our Space: Actualizing Freedom, Asserting Presence, & Cultivating Power.

About the Youth Creative Writing Contest
We are particularly interested in engaging and including the voices of youth at this special event. Today’s youth are more than blooming minds and young faces; they are also at the forefront of struggles for resistance and social change. The selected winner of our competition will receive a cash prize, an opportunity to read/perform their piece at EWOCC, free EWOCC admission for themselves and their family, as well as free EWOCC merchandise. Two runner ups will also be awarded free EWOCC admission.
DEADLINE FOR APPLYING IS FEBRUARY 24th, 2018!!!

Contest Eligibility
Must be between the ages of 13-19 years old
Must be able to attend EWOCC on March 17th, 2018
Must submit application February 24th, 2018 to ewocc.youth.outreach@gmail.com

Preference will be given to individuals who:
Self-identify as a women of color
Speak specifically to a direct or indirect experience with the conference themes

Writing Prompt
A submission with a response to either option a or b will be considered acceptable. Please limit your responses to 3,000 words.

Option A: What does it mean to be a liberated womxn – affirmed in their identity, grounded in community, and empowered by self actualization?


Option B: Take the theme of the 33rd Annual Empowering Women of Color Conference, "Free Space, Our Space: Actualizing Freedom, Asserting Presence, & Cultivating Power," and explain what it means to you. You may draw on your own direct/indirect experiences to talk about how the theme relates to you and what importance it has for your communities and to society more broadly.

You may submit an essay from any class or scholarship application. We are simply interested in getting to know you and your story!
