This survey is designed to elicit responses from students on their experiences learning mathematics in the classroom in order to trace what aspects of mathematics teaching lead to the highest levels of enjoyment and success in the classroom. This survey also probes for knowledge or background on the history of mathematics as part of an inquiry on whether or not the incorporation of an increased focus on the history of mathematics and historical modes of learning mathematics (including historical philosophies of mathematics education's structure and telos) might be useful for further improvement of the classrooms of mathematics today.
The first section of this study looks to inquire into the participant's experiences of learning mathematics related to enjoyment, success, etc. while the second section looks to inquire into the participant's knowledge/understanding of the history and philosophies behind mathematics and mathematics education.
Note that for this survey, the best results will be obtained if participants answer the questions only from memory without looking up any information to aid their responses.
Additionally, there is a final question which asks for contact information if participants would be willing to be involved with additional research which may include a short 15-30 minute follow-up interview.
This study was approved by George Fox's IRB for participants 18 years or older. For any questions you can email Caden Hildenbrand at
