The Chagos Archipelago: A 21st century dispute about Incomplete Decolonisation

The Chagos Archipelago, which was part of the colonial territory of Mauritius prior to its independence from the United Kingdom in 1968, was detached from Mauritius by the colonial power that created a new colony known as British Indian Ocean Territory. The International Court of Justice has stated in an advisory opinion that this detachment was unlawful and that the United Kingdom should put an end to its occupation of the archipelago including the island of Diego Garcia, which serves as a U.S. military base.

Milan Meetarbhan is a Mauritian lawyer specializing in constitutional law and international law and a former Ambassador of Mauritius to the United Nations.  He has also served as an international civil servant, academic, regulator and policy adviser to the prime minister of Mauritius.

Milan was called to the bar at the Middle Temple in London and holds a doctorate in International Law from the Sorbonne, Paris.
