Purpose of the MCS Mentor Program

The Mellon College of Science Undergraduate Mentor Program was established to offer the incoming Freshman class a unique support network specific to the 4 departments of the college as well as the Health Professions Program. The program is designed to give students an upper-class peer advisor who will act as a role model and mentor to students in their Freshman year at Carnegie Mellon University. The role of the mentor consists of an initial six week program to aid the students with concerns of their transition into CMU and MCS. Following this the mentor will offer optional meetings as a peer advisor to freshmen and other undergraduate students in MCS and the HPP.

    Goals of the program:

    • To foster a sense of community across the four departments of the Mellon College of Science • To afford the incoming Freshman class with a unique opportunity of a one-on-one relationship with an upper-class student • To offer a support system not only for the Freshman class, but also the faculty and staff of the Mellon College of Science • To engage the students in personal growth and academic development

    Structure of the program:

During the first 6 weeks of the academic year, weekly meetings between the mentor and the assigned group of 5-10 students will be scheduled. In addition to the weekly meetings with the students, there will be a mentor meeting of all of the MCS undergraduate mentors to prepare to discuss planning and strategies for upcoming meetings with students. Each weekly meeting will have a specific topic designed to engage students in deep conversation about the unique environment of the Mellon College of Science and the opportunities it offers. Following these introductory 6 meetings, there will be optional weekly meetings designed by the mentor and mentees to meet specific needs of the mentor's group. To supplement this, there will be mentor office hours held weekly to offer students an extra sense of support in addition to the faculty and staff support offered by MCS.
