Welcome to the pre-interview process for determining your language status at WUDC 2014. The language committee will review your answers and either issue a decision before the tournament granting you ESL or EFL status or call you for an interview during the competition. If you want to be considered for ESL or EFL status and thus be eligible for the ESL or EFL breaks, please read the following message.
The WUDC Constitution sets out criteria by which a speaker qualifies for either EFL or ESL status in Article 31 and 22(8). The aim of the Language Committee is to ensure all speakers are classified consistently according to the rules laid out. Please find the precise details here:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bx-WvuMQdoQZREt3U3NmZkczM1UTeams can only be EFL if both speakers are classified as EFL. Teams can be ESL if both speakers are ESL or if one is ESL and the other EFL. Speakers will be registered on the basis of their personal status and can receive awards in the category they are speaking in even if their teams cannot.
The order of the procedure is as follows:
1 Please fill out a short questionnaire with basic information about you and your English-language experience level. This should only take a few minites
2 The Language Committee will look at your answers and decide whether you will be classified as an EFL or ESL speaker, or will need to do an interview upon arrival. Any case in which the Committee decides that more information is needed to make a decision, or in which the Committee is inclined to decide against the requested status, will be given interview status.
3. The status of your language application is communicated to you by 27 December. All those who will need to be interviewed, will be alerted and asked to take part in a short interview. Waiting times may be long, so it is advisable to fill in the questionnaire and, hopefully, avoid having to go through with it. Interviews will be held on December 27th (Arrivals day), December 28th (Instruction day) and December 29th (first preliminary day) with the possibility for some interviews to take place on the second preliminary day. You will get the result right after the interview.
4 After all interviews are conducted, the Language Committee will post the results.
5 If you disagree with the Committee’s decision, you need to lodge an appeal before dinner on the second preliminary day, December 30th. Appeals will be dealt with during the evening of the 30th and if necessary during lunch on the last preliminary day. Decisions need to be finalised before Round 9. All decisions after an appeal will be final. Appeals will be heard by the full Language Committee, as opposed to the two or three members who decide in the first interview.
