We the undersigned,
Representing different roles of religious leadership in our communities as Imams, Resident Scholars, Khatibs, Religious Instructors and teachers,
Reiterating the calls that have preceded this one such as (
http://goo.gl/F2GWw2) and (
http://goo.gl/d42IkG).
As representatives of our communities call upon the Muslim community jointly and individually:
-
To hearken God’s command to “stand for justice, as witnesses before God, even if against yourselves.” (Quran 4:135)
-
To exemplify integrity and beauty and to denounce coarseness, evil and oppression (16:90)
-
To refuse any and all assistance to organizations and individuals actively opposed to these precepts of justice and the fight against oppression.
-
To refuse any and all assistance to those actively working against the legitimacy of non-violent resistance,
-
To refuse any and all assistance to those engaged in incitement against any faith group, whether Muslim, Jewish, Christian or otherwise,
-
To refuse any and all assistance to those working to usurp and politicize interfaith work,
-
To condemn all who would seek to deny oppressed peoples their agency for self-determination,
-
To refuse any and all assistance to those participating in and lending backing to programs and foundations opposed to the application of boycott, divestment and sanctions of entities linked to oppression (for an explainer on BDS see:
http://goo.gl/IOJeUu),
-
And to refuse any and all assistance to those seeking to break the Muslim Community’s solidarity with the oppressed.
We single out in this instance those supporting, advocating for, and representing the Muslim Leadership Initiative (MLI) of the Shalom Hartman Institute (for background, please read here:
shar.es/1bibvX). The participants of this program, hailed by the above named institute as leaders in the Muslim community, have sought to normalize their actions through broad claims of legitimacy in the American Muslim Community. We reject their actions as antithetical to the Quranic call to Justice and Peace and as unrepresentative of the broader Muslim community’s values.
We call on all Muslim Communities and their leaders to remain civil and respectful in advising those involved and refrain from personal and demeaning attacks. And reiterate the necessity to stand with those that promote peace, non-violent protest, positive interfaith work, and solidarity with the powerless.
