A NOTE FROM MC: My writing--especially in my book, Walks & Weathers—comes out of a life of reading, writing, and talking about texts and ideas. A lot of my reading, writing, and talking has happened in classrooms (and, in the past five years, in Zoom rooms). I decided that, for that reason, the best way to celebrate this new book would be to create some classroom-inspired situations for reading, writing, and talking about the book's subjects: walking and weather.
Each class will feature a reading list and a shared folder of optional out-of-class readings and resources, available a week before the start of class. Each of our meetings will include portions where we: 1) read and discuss texts together, 2) experiment and write with a set of structured prompts, and 3) share and discuss our writing from the day.
Some of the authors we'll likely look at in the Walking class are: Kristi Maxwell, Urayoan Noel, Harryette Mullen, C. S. Giscombe, Joshua Edwards, Brian Teare, Linda Russo, Chaun Webster, and William and Dorothy Wordsworth. The subjects we'll focus on in each meeting are: 1) walking as writing (some procedural approaches), 2) place and placing (history, ecology, and the shapes of places), and 3) walking and writing together.
Some of the authors we'll likely look at in the Weather class are: Lisa Robertson, Renee Gladman, Bernadette Mayer, Zane Koss, Stephen Collis, Joan Naviyuk Kane, Stephen Ratcliffe, Dorothy Wordsworth, and Anne Carson. In each session we'll focus on one of these topics: 1) weather as noticing and change, 2) anthropocene weathers, 3) forms of weather/forms of poems.
