Dear Speaker Johnson, Minority Leader Jeffries, Majority Leader Schumer, and Minority Leader McConnell:
As leaders in America’s clean energy boom, we have seen firsthand how the Inflation Reduction Act has spurred innovation, new manufacturing, and job creation. Since August 2022, the clean energy industry has announced more than 271,000 new jobs across the country producing cleaner, cheaper energy choices for all Americans. With continued investment, our industry is on track to build entire vital supply chains here at home and create more good-paying jobs in the process. We write to implore you against continued efforts to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act, which has served as the catalyst for our growing industry.
Repealing the clean energy provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act would be nothing short of an economic and national security disaster. It would pull the rug out from growing American businesses and the countless workers that have already been hired. It would leave factories half-built, with construction workers laid off mid-project, and orders from surrounding businesses unfulfilled. It would deprive the American people of new energy choices which will drive down families’ energy costs more and more as businesses grow to scale and competition spurs further innovation. Worst of all, repeal would solidify our international competitors’ head start and leave America dependent on those competitors and even adversaries.
We need to strengthen the Inflation Reduction Act, not repeal it. This crucial legislation has catalyzed an innovative and visionary clean energy industry. Thanks to a ten-year window on many of its provisions, the Inflation Reduction Act has given businesses much-needed tax and regulatory certainty. American businesses are able to harness the ingenuity and work ethic that has made the American economy the leader of the world for decades. While years of inaction and congressional gridlock have given foreign competitors a head start, America is now already coming back stronger, and with continued support – as other forms of energy have always enjoyed – America will win this critical race.
A particular strength of the Inflation Reduction Act is the investment throughout the supply chain here at home, from mining critical minerals to processing and building components and producing the highest quality finished products in the world – working in tandem with the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and CHIPS and Science Act. This is not only an economic imperative but also an essential national security priority for the years ahead. The American people have felt all too deeply the impact of over-dependence on foreign supply chains through post-pandemic inflation.
American businesses and workers producing more energy, especially cleaner and cheaper energy choices, is something that can and should unite all of us no matter our political leanings. We urge you to work together to reinforce federal investments in American clean energy and provide the certainty and predictability that every business needs to truly thrive. Let’s abandon the threats of repeal, and instead work together to strengthen investments in American industries that will lead to a vibrant American economy for generations to come.
Sincerely,
___________
