Thank you for your interest in eligibility testing for the Highly Capable Program in the Issaquah School District. Please complete this brief questionnaire so that we can learn more about your student and prepare testing arrangements for your student at their neighborhood school. Your student must reside in a district boundary school, be home-schooled, or attend a private or online school. Students enrolled in other school districts are not eligible for testing.
Students will take the i-Ready Reading and Math tests in the ISD Administration building. Registration is required to make i-Ready accounts for private and home-based students. Private school and home-based students will take i-Ready assessments during the same window as enrolled students. HOWEVER, private school and home-based students will take i-Ready tests at the ISD Administration Building.
The i-Ready Reading and Math tests will be administered on Saturday, Jan 9th and Saturday, Jan 23 of
2027. Due to the number of students this year, students will be assigned morning or afternoon testing windows. Confirmation emails will be sent to participating private and home-based families directly by email. Please ensure timely registration to avoid missing out. i-Ready Math and Reading will serve as the screening assessment. Students who advance to testing will take the full Cognitive Aptitude Test (CogAT). Information about i-Ready can be found at https://www.isd411.org/academics/testing/district-assessments/iready.
KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS: The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) Form 7 Level 7 will be administered to all eligible students in February 22-26, 2027. Families will be contacted with more information about CogAT testing schedules closer to the testing window (the registration window closes on 11/13/2026).
SECOND-GRADE STUDENTS: The Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (TTCT) will be administered to all eligible students in November 30- December 11, 2027. And the Cognitive Abilities Screening Test (CogAT) form 8 Level 9 will be administered in March 1-12, 2027. Families will be contacted with more information about CogAT and TTCT testing schedules closer to the testing window (registration window closes 11/13/2026).
Information about the CogAT Test:
- The test is a paper and pencil test - students mark their answers directly on an answer sheet.
- The test measures learned reasoning abilities developed through in-school and out-of-school experiences. The Verbal Battery assesses students' abilities to use search, retrieval, and comparison processes essential for verbal reasoning. The Quantitative Battery assesses students' abilities to reason about patterns and relationships using concepts critical for quantitative thinking. The Nonverbal Battery assesses the student's reasoning abilities with more novel questions that use spatial and figural content.
- The tests are timed. Each battery takes 30 minutes and is made up of three 10-minute subtests.
- Each section provides students with practice questions, which they can work on together under the guidance of a trained proctor. This lets students become familiar with the test format and practice filling in answer circles, helping them feel more prepared.
Information about the TTCT Test (for Second graders only):
- The TTCT test is figural. Students are given three different figural tests.
- The responses are mainly pictorial. Students are required to write a small amount when directed to label or name the pictures they have drawn.
- Three ten-minute timed subtests are Picture Construction, Picture Completion, and Lines.
What happens after testing:
- All testing materials are mailed to the vendors for scoring, which can take 6-8 weeks for completion.
- Full eligibility testing uses the CogAT (and TTCT for 2nd grade students) scores and the i-Ready math and reading assessments.
- The Multidisciplinary Selection Committee (MDSC) will review students’ assessment results in Mid-May 2027 to determine their eligibility for the Highly Capable Program.
- Private school/home-based families will receive a score report by email.
- Please do not contact the Highly Capable Program office or your school until you receive your student’s score report and eligibility letter, which will arrive in Mid-May of 2027.
- The committee has not made final placement decisions before this time.
- Please see the Issaquah School District Highly Capable Program Continuum of Services and how to file an appeal: https://www.isd411.org/programs-services/gifted-highly-capable/appeal-process.
