Film Night: Gattaca and the Ethics of Genetic Engineering

Join us for a screening of Gattaca, a 1997 sci-fi film that explores a future shaped by extreme genetic engineering, social stratification and persecution based on genetic profile, and corporate power. After the film, we’ll host both small group and open discussion on the themes it raises and how they relate to current and emerging developments in genetics, biotechnology, and society. What ethical questions does the film pose? How close are we to its vision of the future? Is it truly even a dystopia? We’ll reflect on the relevance of Gattaca in today’s world and consider the broader implications of advancing genetic technologies. All are welcome, and no background in genetics or ethics is required. An RSVP is greatly encouraged and appreciated, but not required, so feel free to bring your friends along with you at the last minute!

Food will be provided, including pizza, soda, and popcorn.

Open to the public.

Time: 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 17th
Location: Cummings Life Science Center, Room 101 (920 E 58th St, Chicago, IL 60637)
