The ICGC Machines and Meanings (M&M) Forum at the University of Minnesota is planning to run a dedicated AI and Society reading circle this Fall 2026. Starting in early september, the M&M forum will convene a reading circle meeting fortnightly across five online sessions. Through these set of readings (suggestions welcome) we aim to generate convergences in interests, and share a collective archive of notes, references, and ideas for further research, through discussion. The essential reading load will be about 60-65 pages each session, with one session going up to 80 pgs. The immediate aim of the reading circle is to form a core group that can drive the activities of the Machines and Meanings Forum for the coming years, and shape this collaborative to take on humanistic, practical, and design questions on AI in the university and society.
In the future, the group will experiment with collaborative forms of reading, critical reflective writing, engagement research, publication and documentation, and aims to create an accessible and inclusive space to bridge the epistemic divide between academic research and practice on AI in society.
This form is to map out modalities of participation and areas of interest across the university and beyond.
