Next year we are considering splitting up the tech prep into two classes. Each group will work on different projects and will be learning different things. This survey will help us determine your preference and it will help determine how to form the classes and what components to include.
Remember, this is just a survey. Answering one way or another does not guarantee that you will be placed in a particular class or not have to learn certain skills. At the same time be honest. We hope to come up with a class better suited for your interests and gifts.
Here are the two options so far:
1. Web development/elements of programming: In this course you will learn how to make a website using HTML and CSS, the language used to make all web sites. You will make several websites, some about topics you choose, and others we will build together. In The second half of the class you will learn programming concepts using Scratch. With Scratch you will learn how to make video games and animations that you can share and remix online. Besides Scratch, you will begin learning JQuery and Javascript, programming languages that integrate with HTML to make rich, interactive websites. Some of this course will also be self-paced through Codeacademy and Codeavengers.
2. 21st Century skills: This is a more general technology course. In this course you will learn basic computer concepts like hardware and software basics, You will learn and improve on your keyboarding skills, internet search skills, and learn how to make dynamic presentations using the internet, Google docs, and other resources. You will be exposed to multimedia software and drawing software to use alongside your presentations. This course is also designed to support your math/science/Language Arts curriculum, so expect to work on projects related to what you are studying in other classes.
>> A third option is also available, but for a limited number of students. This are the Tech Support Partner positions. Tech Support Partners will spend tech times and parts of the morning helping students in lower grades with their technology needs. Next year our school will purchase over 200 chromebooks. We are going to need a few middle school students to help the little ones when they get stuck. Tech Support Partners will be trained on basic troubleshooting for computers and will rotate throughout the year.
