The Asian Pacific Student Association (APSA) at UC Irvine will be holding its annual benefit talent showcase called “Always Chase Your Dreams” (ACYD), which will be held on Friday, May 17, 2013 as part of the annual Asian Pacific-Islander Heritage Month (APIHM) at UCI. The purpose of ACYD is to highlight API talents in the performing arts. We will be accepting auditions ranging from singing, dancing, etc. and there will be promising awards for the winners. Upon acceptance, you will be performing for a large audience as well as a judging panel of prominent Asian Pacific Islander (API) artists. There will be a meet and greet following the show.
We are hosting a non-profit event focusing on API activism along with rising API talent and affirmation created within our community. We will also be collecting donations for aspiring API talents, including Sessions LA, which is “a music writing, production, recording, & DJing program for youth and young adults in Los Angeles that promotes youth development, nurtures critical thinking, and fosters community building through the process of creating music.” For more information about Sessions LA, please visit their website at
http://www.sessionsla.com/.
Location of the event (address): UCI Student Center Terrace - UC Irvine, Irvine, CA (outdoors)
Date of Event: Friday, May 17, 2013
Time of Event: 7 - 9PM
Most of the performances will be from API students at UC Irvine. All singing competitors will be required to use original songs and/or music by Asian Pacific-Islanders (i.e. Blue Scholars, Nujabes, dumbfoundead, Jennifer Chung, etc.). There will also be a dancing component as well. We will also be inviting other well-known API artists as judges.

GUIDELINES
•
Participants must be current students at UC Irvine (at least one if auditioning as a group)
•
Participants must be of Asian Pacific-Islander descent
o
If auditioning as a group, the majority of the group must be of Asian Pacific-Islander descent (more than 50% are API)
•
Acts MUST feature artists who are/background music that is Asian Pacific-Islander (dance routines, covers, background music to various acts), talk about Asian Pacific-Islander issues, or Asian Pacific-Islander cultural acts
o
Exceptions are for original songs, spoken word pieces
o
We suggest that your audition be performed exactly how it will be done on the day of the show
If writing an original song, etc. or if extra time is needed to prepare the piece, we will accept an audition that does not adhere to this guideline. However, we will request a portion of the piece being worked on and will follow-up for a fuller version of the talent piece before admitting people into the final ten
o
*The entire act does not need to feature API music, but it is highly encouraged so that you can earn the most points for that category
o
*Examples of incorporating music if not singing (i.e. dancing) would be having songs by House Rulez, TOKiMONSTA, Nujabes, Big Bang, Narai, Jennifer Chung, M.I.A., dumbfoundead, etc. This is an educational experience for both the audience and the participants and is a great platform to gain experience, exposure, and sharing the love for the performing arts for rising API talent.
•
Acts must be amateurs. This means that if you have ever earned a portion of your living from your talent, you will not be eligible to participate
•
Acts should be from 3 – 7 minutes
•
All prospective competitors must submit this audition form, whether auditioning live or through video
-It is highly encouraged to audition in person so that we can meet you and get a feel for how your performance would potentially be like on the day of ACYD.
•
Audition moderators reserve the right to determine whether the performance fulfills these requirements
•
All competitors must be available on May 17, Friday, from 7 – 9PM, preferably from 5PM – 9PM for soundcheck
