AIN 2019 Stony Brook Conference Scholarship Application
APPLICATIONS ARE DUE BY April 30, 2019. Award recipients will be notified by mid-May 2019. (Subsequent awards may be possible if additional funds are donated.)

Thank you for your interest in applying for a scholarship to the Applied Improvisation Network (AIN) World Conference 2019 taking place at Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, NY, August 8-11, in partnership with the Alan Alda Center For Communicating Science.

The Applied Improvisation Network (AIN) is committed to increasing accessibility of this conference to people from underserved and underrepresented communities by providing scholarships to as many deserving people as possible.

Diversity reflects all the ways in which people differ, encompassing the different characteristics that make one individual or social group different from another. Diversity often references our differences based on things such as race, ethnicity, gender, disability, sexual orientation, age, nationality, religion, socioeconomic status, and education. It can also reflect a vast array of individual differences (e.g. personality, language, learning styles, and life experiences).

The theme for the AIN2019 Stony Brook Conference is Communicating Beyond Borders and Barriers: Applications Of Improvisation In Society.

At a time when the world is clamoring for collaboration, connection and creative problem-solving, AIN is poised to offer what promises to be one of our most expansive, inclusive and dynamic conferences yet. How does Improv help us understand across difference? How does it allow us to exercise and strengthen our empathy, courage and range? What tools, mindsets, opportunities, insights, solutions, bridges, and salves can it provide? Exploring these questions and more through shared experience, conversations, performances, discussions and expert presentations, the conference aims to expand our individual and professional expertise and inspiration.

AIN thrives because of the commitment of our members and our part-time administrative help. We are a 99% a volunteer organization, including the Board of Directors. A significant portion of the work of the organization, including the planning for the conference is done by volunteers.

The scholarship funds:
In 2017, we offered our first scholarship to help make it possible to support the attendance of one person to the conference. In 2018, two scholarships were awarded.

Our scholarship goals are twofold:
- to increase inclusion and diversity in our practitioner community
- to support one or more individuals with financial need

The amount awarded may be partial or full scholarship (conference registration valued at $585 early bird rate). Additional stipend may be awarded depending on the amount of funds raised. (Lodging is not included. The rate for dormitory rooms on the Stony Brook campus are $84 per night for singles.)

- Funds are used for registration for the AIN Stony Brook 2019 Conference.

- For those attending a conference for the first time, scholarship recipients will be paired with an AIN member who can be available to answer questions and provide introductions to other members.

We are looking for candidates who meet the following criteria:
* Increase diversity:
- An individual who is a part of an underrepresented group from any country… (persons of color, varying age groups, members of the LGBQT community, individuals with disabilities, retired military, veterans, those who are socio-economically challenged, individuals from diverse religions, gender identification, etc.)
- An applied improviser from a geographically under-represented region of the world at the AIN Conference

* Financial need:
- Individuals who have financial needs, and would not be able to attend the conference due to lack of funds.
- Someone who will benefit from either a full-scholarship of the registration costs or a partial-scholarship to offset their conference costs

If selected, you will need to confirm your plan (based upon the level of support given) by late May 2019 to attend #AIN19.

Subsequently, you’ll need to register for the conference no later than early June 2019 to receive the $585 early bird rate. (Note that the early bird rate will be honored for Scholarship recipients. Additional scholarship funds may be received and distributed following the early bird registration deadline.)
